The definition of sterilizing: to kill all bacteria and fungi and their spores. There are 3 ways to accomplish sterilization:
- Steam under pressure - for at least 12 minutes
- Ethylene Oxide gas - for 1 to 2 hours
- Chemical Sporicide - for 3 or more hours
The definition of disinfect: to kill virtually all live bacteria and fungi, but all methods/products will kill all types of organisms or their spores. There are 2 ways to do this:
- Immerse in boiling water (212F) for at least 2 minutes.
- Immerse in a chemical germicide or bactericide for at least 10 minutes. Some common germicides are alcohol, phenol, chlorine and Quaternary Ammonium Chloride (quats)
The definition of sanitize: to reduce the number of microbes by killing and/or removing most of them. You sanitize an area by:
- Wiping an area with a soapy cloth or sponge
- HOST cleaning the carpet
